Fairshake, the cryptocurrency industry's leading political action committee, suffered a major setback after spending $56 million to oppose Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown in Ohio, only for him to win re-election by nearly 5%.
Fairshake and its affiliates spent approximately $154 million supporting candidates in the 2026 elections, with more than a third of the spending directed at defeating Brown. Despite the setback, the committee secured victories in several races, including helping Republican Senator Pete Ricketts retain his Nebraska seat. It also backed candidates across both political parties.
The results raise questions about the effectiveness of the industry's heavy campaign spending in securing political influence. Ripple's Chief Legal Officer, Stuart Alderoty, maintained that Fairshake still achieved meaningful victories and helped elect pro-crypto lawmakers. The election outcome also creates uncertainty for crypto legislation, particularly the stalled Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, as Democrats gain greater influence in Congress.
Fairshake has said it will continue supporting pro-crypto candidates and has approximately $56 million remaining for the 2028 election cycle.
The results highlight the challenges facing the crypto industry's political strategy as it seeks to build congressional support and advance digital asset legislation.
