Stripe Makes Largest Proposed Fintech Acquisition Bid for PayPal for Over $53 Billion

Payments giant Stripe and private equity firm Advent International have submitted a joint proposal to acquire PayPal for more than $53 billion, potentially making it one of the largest fintech acquisitions in history. If completed, the transaction would combine two of the world's most influential digital payments companies while significantly strengthening their position in stablecoins and blockchain-based financial infrastructure.

According to Reuters, the consortium has offered $60.50 per share, representing a 28% premium over PayPal's previous closing price. The proposal, backed by approximately $50 billion in committed financing, follows an initial acquisition approach made in April 2026.

Under the proposed structure, Stripe and Advent International would each own a 50% stake in PayPal rather than separating the company's businesses. However, PayPal has not responded to the proposal, and there is no certainty that discussions will lead to a formal agreement.

The proposed acquisition comes as PayPal seeks to revive growth after several years of increasing competition from digital wallets, fintech startups, and alternative payment providers. Once valued at approximately $360 billion during the pandemic-era technology boom, the company's market value has declined significantly as growth slowed and competitive pressures intensified.

For Stripe, the acquisition would represent a major strategic expansion beyond merchant payment processing into consumer payments, peer-to-peer transfers, and digital wallets. The company, recently valued at $159 billion, is already the world's most valuable private fintech firm.

The transaction also carries significant implications for the digital asset industry. Stripe has accelerated its blockchain strategy through acquisitions, including Bridge and Privy, strengthening its stablecoin infrastructure. PayPal, meanwhile, operates PYUSD, its U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin. A combined entity would become one of the largest financial technology companies actively investing in blockchain-based payments and regulated digital assets.

If completed, the proposed acquisition would mark a defining moment for the global fintech industry. Beyond creating one of the world's largest digital payments companies, the deal would further accelerate the convergence of traditional financial services and blockchain infrastructure as stablecoins become an increasingly important component of global payment systems.
