Brazil's Stock Exchange Completes First Tokenized Cattle Trade

Brazil's leading stock exchange, B3, has completed its first tokenized cattle transaction, marking another milestone in the adoption of real world asset (RWA) tokenization. The pilot enables investors to own fractional interests in livestock while using blockchain technology to improve transparency, collateral management, and access to agricultural financing.

B3 confirmed the completion of its first tokenized cattle transaction, with approximately 100,000 Brazilian Reais (about $18,000) worth of livestock traded on-chain. The initiative allows investors to purchase fractional ownership of cattle through blockchain-based tokens instead of buying entire animals, significantly lowering the capital required to gain exposure to Brazil's livestock industry.

The pilot was developed by CowMed, which uses smart collars attached to cattle to monitor each animal's health, location, and behavior in real time. The collected data is converted into a secure digital identity for every animal and linked to financing agreements registered on B3's infrastructure.

This digital identification enables livestock to serve as collateral without requiring physical inspections of farms, streamlining agricultural financing while improving transparency for lenders and investors. To manage biological risks, the platform also allows producers to digitally replace livestock if an animal dies. The financing structure includes approximately 20% additional animals to ensure collateral levels remain intact throughout the loan period. Currently, around 100,000 dairy cows across more than 1,000 farms in Brazil and other countries in the Americas are monitored through the platform, representing an estimated herd value of more than $400 million.

B3 expects roughly 20% of participating producers to adopt the financing model, potentially supporting around $80 million in credit operations backed by tokenized livestock.

The pilot demonstrates how blockchain is expanding beyond traditional financial assets into agriculture. By combining real-time monitoring, digital identity, and tokenization, the initiative could improve access to capital, increase market efficiency, and create new investment opportunities, highlighting the growing role of real-world asset tokenization in modern financial markets.
