Base Shifts Focus to Trading, Payments and Tokenization After Jesse Pollak Admits Social Strategy Fell Short

Coinbase executive and Base creator Jesse Pollak is stepping back from leading the Base app after admitting that the network's strategy of prioritizing on-chain social applications and creator coins failed to drive the level of adoption it had anticipated. Base is now shifting its focus toward trading, payments, tokenization, and broader financial infrastructure as it seeks to accelerate mainstream blockchain adoption.

Jesse Pollak has announced that he will step back from leading the Base app, with crypto investor and entrepreneur Jordan Fish (Cobie) taking over responsibility for the consumer-facing application. The leadership transition follows Pollak's public acknowledgment that Base's emphasis on building an on-chain social economy left the ecosystem trailing competitors in several key areas, including trading, payments, and tokenization. Reflecting on the strategy, Pollak admitted that while Base successfully attracted developers, social applications failed to become the catalyst for crypto adoption that the team had anticipated. Projects such as Farcaster, Zora, mini apps, and creator coins did not achieve the expected level of sustained growth, prompting the company to reassess its priorities.

According to Pollak, the focus on social innovation came at the expense of building stronger products in sectors that were rapidly becoming central to the industry, including perpetual futures, prediction markets, stablecoin payments, and tokenized assets.

He also acknowledged that the ecosystem lost momentum as confidence declined, while competitors continued strengthening their offerings across key financial applications.

Going forward, Pollak said he will concentrate on positioning Base as blockchain infrastructure for global finance, with the network prioritizing products that solve real financial problems rather than relying on social applications to drive adoption.

Under the new strategy, Base intends to focus on three primary areas: trading, payments, and AI agents, while continuing to compete with emerging blockchain infrastructure providers such as Robinhood and Stripe.

Pollak added that recent growth in stablecoins, prediction markets, perpetual trading, and tokenization has reinforced his belief that better financial infrastructure, not social applications will become the primary driver of bringing billions of users on-chain.

Base's strategic shift reflects a broader evolution within the crypto industry, where attention is increasingly moving away from experimental social applications toward practical financial infrastructure. As institutional adoption accelerates and demand for blockchain-based payments, trading, and tokenized assets continues to grow, networks that deliver real-world financial utility are likely to become the next leaders in on-chain adoption.
